Surprising statistics about mental health in the workplace: infographic

Mental health conditions are more common than many people think. Depression affects one in six, and anxiety one in four, Australians in their lifetime, so if you haven’t experienced mental illness at some point in your life, it’s guaranteed that someone you know has.

A 2014 PwC report found that mental health conditions cost Australian workplaces $10.9 billion in lost productivity a year due to absenteeism, presenteeism and compensation claims. There is a significant pay-off for organisations to invest in the mental health of its employees: the report estimated that taking action to create a mentally healthy workplace earned a positive ROI of 2.3.

Reducing stigma around mental illness is essential to the creation of a positive work environment. Managers and leaders who are educated about the issue are better placed to reduce the impact of mental health conditions on their organisations.
