Leadership Matters: November introduction from Marie-Louise Pearson OAM FIML, Chair of the Board

Welcome to the November Edition of Leadership Matters.

I hope your festive season preparations are well under way. As we plan for how we will be celebrating getting together with family and friends that we haven’t hugged enough during the pandemic, I hope you can find time to look through this edition of Leadership Matters. We have a wonderfully diverse mix of thought leadership which focuses on what is really important.

This November Edition includes an informative and practical article from PwC Australia written by Nathan Schlesinger about the roles and responsibilities of managers as we ‘open up’ and learn to live with COVID-19 in our workplaces. We also explore The top 5 challenges for emerging leaders, The seven habits of highly resilient organisations, How senior managers can set the tone in a hybrid world, and finally an opinion piece that features the General Manager of New Zealand’s leading shared workspace provider, Generator.

During this past month I had the pleasure of gaining leadership insights first-hand at a Member event hosted from my home town. We welcomed The Hon Shane Stone AC QC to present live in Darwin with our Members and friends, and virtually through Zoom to those as far away as New Zealand and Fiji! Shane is the Coordinator-General of the National Recovery and Resilience Agency and amongst others, a former Chief Minister of the Northern Territory.

Many of the themes in this Leadership Matters newsletter were touched on by Shane in his ‘lessons of leadership’ discussion. Some of the challenges we face today as managers and leaders of organisations, and the requirement for resilience in the workplace, were spoken about from Shane’s own experience seeing first-hand the mental health impact of COVID-19, and the ongoing suffering he witnesses from the effects of natural disasters (including Covid-19) in his role as Coordinator-General. A very passionate reminder that leaders really do matter and good leaders make a difference.

His key takeaways for IML ANZ Members were to listen, communicate plainly, know your people, have a roadmap, be authentic, lead by example, and be accountable for your decisions.

I know you will enjoy this month’s edition of Leadership Matters.

Yours Sincerely,

Marie-Louise Pearson OAM FIML Life
