Leadership Matters: January introduction from Marie-Louise Pearson OAM FIML, Chair of the Board

Welcome to our first 2022 Leadership Matters. I hope you were able to have some quality time with family and friends. I also experienced mindful rest whilst isolating at home as so many of us are doing.

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Sam Bell FIML as IML ANZ’s Chief Executive Officer. Many of our Members know Sam well as he has been our Interim CEO for the past six months.

Through an extensive recruitment process, Sam demonstrated he was the best candidate to lead IML ANZ. Sam displayed his strategic perspective and passion for leadership and capability development, and its power to create positive outcomes for people, workplaces, and communities. Sam has a strong vision for IML ANZ and I hope you join the Board in congratulating him, as we look forward to working with him on this journey.

A new year is an opportunity to reflect on the previous year, and to set goals for what we’d like to achieve in the coming year. This month’s Leadership Matters is devoted to shifting our focus onto 2022 and how we can all achieve a fulfilling year ahead.

Highly recommended is the discussion article with IML ANZ Fellow Julia Connell, Executive MBA Director at the University of Newcastle who unpacks the Key Issues for Leaders in 2022. The sentiments of the article were very instructive for managers and leaders as we enter the new year, ‘leaders can’t go past self-awareness, empathy and wellbeing as the cornerstone of leadership culture.’

IML ANZ is here to support our Members achieve their professional development goals for 2022. The article 3 Tips for Planning your Professional Development explores planning and setting goals for your own skills and capability development.

The mindset shift from 2021 to 2022 is also the sentiment of an excellent article by workplace expert Michelle Gibbings CMgr FIML. Her article, Six leadership lessons from 2021 to help you lead better in 2022, talks about learning from the challenges of 2021 and starting the new working year in a positive mindset.

The new year is also a great opportunity for IML ANZ to reflect on how we can support our Members during the next 12 months. We know that during this period of global uncertainty, great managers and leaders in all aspects of work and life really do matter. We stand ready to support our Members achieve their goals in 2022. I urge you to connect with us and let us know what you need from us.

Be your best,

Marie-Louise Pearson OAM FIML Life
